Pauline Courtney
I am a Barrister and Commercial Mediator (FAMINZ) specialising in public and commercial law including in evolving areas of AI, automated decision-making and privacy.
Pauline is an experienced civil litigator and commercial mediator (FAMINZ). She has led a team defending a representative proceeding; argued cases and provided advice in public law and commercial areas including revenue and Customs law; company law (bankruptcy, insolvency and creditors’ remedies including freezing orders); health, social welfare, conservation and treaty-related issues; and evolving issues in the digital space including artificial intelligence, automated decision-making and privacy. She is the Independent Reviewer of Auditor Appointment Methodology for the Office of Auditor-General; has been appointed as an Independent Adjudicator by the President of the NZLS; led the team that settled a long-running public works mediation; and is on the large panel for natural hazards mediation. Pauline is a faculty member of the New Zealand Law Society Litigation Skills programme. After 20 years with Crown Law, most latterly as a Senior Crown Counsel, Pauline now practises as a Barrister Sole through Kate Sheppard Chambers.
