I am a Barrister and Commercial Mediator (Mediation Fellow AMINZ) specialising in public and commercial law including evolving areas of AI and automated decision-making.

 

Pauline is an experienced civil litigator and commercial mediator (Mediation Fellow AMINZ).  Recent work includes leading a team defending a representative proceeding in the High Court involving issues of breach of contract, equitable estoppel, quantum meruit and discrimination; successful appeal of a decision on customs duties on royalties; cases involving treaty-related issues for various clients; advice and presentations to clients on issues related to AI, automated decision-making and large volumes of electronic information; independent adjudication of estate-related dispute; and independent audit of legality of processes.  Other areas of expertise include:  public law; revenue law including tax and customs; bankruptcy, insolvency and creditors’ remedies including freezing orders).  I have mediated and co-mediated disputes resulting in settlements including public works; breach of contract; debt recovery; trusts and relationship property; regulatory disputes; and individual and multi-party team conflicts.  I am a faculty member of the New Zealand Law Society Litigation Skills programme; I am on the New Zealand Bar Association Technology Committee; and I Co-Convene the AMINZ Wellington Network, am a mentor, and am on the Fair Way large panel for natural hazards mediation.  After 20 years with Crown Law, most latterly as a Senior Crown Counsel, Pauline now practises as a Barrister Sole through Kate Sheppard Chambers.
